Mark Watkins

My collage uses discarded fragments of the past and present which are reimagined in deliberate or accidental juxtapositions to create new images – surreal worlds inhabited by characters who all have a story to tell. The underlying themes and ideas make reference to human existence and the way we live our lives. The pieces tend to be small in scale and mounted to cardboard, wood and other objects such as vinyl records.

The execution of the work in terms of using fragments of imagery and material is driven by a fascination of memory and dreams. How memories are stored over time, how they can surface at any given, random moment and how they are lost (some temporarily) or become fragmented. The worlds in which we dream provide the ideal visual language for collage; environments or situations that can be equally absurd, disturbing, humorous or beautiful.

The studio is in South Derbyshire and visits can be arranged.
All the work is for sale. Please email or call for information.
